One of the critical pieces to building a business especially online is learning how to generate web traffic. I currently work with a couple of methods but the one I wanted to share today was a low cost method I use every day.

Generate Web Traffic – Using SEO

One of the cool things about building a business is that there are so many ways to drive traffic. The 2 main ways are free and paid. In my book they are both paid since your either using money or time. People these days don't put enough emphasis on what their time is worth and just throw it around like it's worthless. I would highly recommend new people to the industry to understand working something for free doesn't work out in the end.

Let's stay on point and talk about how to generate web traffic using SEO.

SEO stand for Search Engine Optimization. It is essentially the art of marketing your business on the internet so search engines like Google, Yahoo, and Bing will drive their customers to you.

I love this type of business model since it's like opening a store and allowing people to visit depending on their needs. There is very little forced advertising in this method and the amount of traffic generated is primarily determined on what your marketing in terms of keywords.

Sure there are other ways to drive traffic like social network syndication but SEO in my opinion is one of those things that really just worked for me and my business.

SEO will take a couple of skills but the ones I would like to focus on are:

Keyword Research

I would say keyword research has got to be the primary principle of SEO. If you are not getting good keywords your efforts in SEO will suffer. Keyword research has a lot of little things to learn about it but in a nutshell I would like you to remember that Keyword Research is the way search engines find YOU. Don't get too caught up in the “do you write for people or search engine robots” as the more you write you will get the hand of writing for both.

Keyword Research isn't too hard if you understand a couple of things.

1) Find keywords that have traffic. It's much easier to convert and monetize traffic where there is traffic already there. Forcing trends or forcing something people aren't looking for makes it a bit trickier to generate web traffic to your website. For now, primarily go ahead and find things that have traffic in there already.

2) Find keywords that you can possibily win at. The best way for me to describe this is why go after a giant that has traffic when you can go after a peon that has “some traffic”. I would rather my students get some traffic with small keyword competition then to go after the super competitive looking for 100 hits a day. The process of SEO should be a gradual build up of traffic. I would rather not see my students getting this home run mentality too soon into their internet marketing training. Sure if you write enough and your have enough mileage under your belt you will experience these home run keywords but for the most part 90% of what you write about early on will not do too much for your traffic.

Generate web traffic that already exist and also pick your spots into being able to have ones that you can win at. This is critical and my one 2 punch in being able to get some traffic to your website.
