Episode 1 General Recap Of Lawrence Tam
Hey, hey, hey. This is Lawrence Tam. I just wanted to welcome you to episode one of my podcast. This is Project Mayhem, and I wanted to just, you know, do a quick introduction of who I am, and you know, why you should listen to me if you’re looking to build a business from home and how I can help you, right?
You’ll hear more about my story along, as we go into the podcast. I’ll be interviewing a lot of different people on my teams, guests, and basically just walking you through the process of how, basically, in 2007 I just made a change and, you know, today being 2013, you know — why did it take five years to kind of do the things that I want to do?
The numbers that I’ve done has been nuts. So let’s start from, let’s just start real quick — why you should listen to me and what I can bring to the table, you know. We’ll bring on some more podcasts, right? Some more episodes for you to dive into.
So number one, my name is Lawrence Tam. I am a full-time internet marketer. I used to do mechanical engineering for over a decade — 12 years. I actually retired — early retirement because I was laid off back in April 30th, 2012. I got laid off, and you know, I was working in oil and gas, making about $80,000 a year and I thought that was my life. Basically, at that point, right?
But luckily, I had a side business, right? My side business, I’ve been running since 2007. 2007, my dad actually brought me into network marketing, saying, “Hey son, you’re not going to be making a ton of money.” He’s in sales, he’s in real estate, and he’s like, “You know, why don’t you just supplement some of your income — help your kids pay through college, pay college,” because college was … I think we had a financial advisor tell us, you know, “You’re probably going to need $150,000+ per child to go to a public school like University of Texas, or something.”
So, you know, my journey was through networking marketing in 2007. In 2008, I stumbled upon something called “affiliate marketing” in sponsoring. That led me to trying to build my network marketing business on the Internet. In 2009, I went to my full-fledged first Internet marketing company to learn funnels and counter pages with My Lead System Pro, where I became, you know, one of the top producers — I think I was #2 in there for a very long time.
Now, fast forward to 2011. For the first half of its existence in Empower Network, I was the #1 income earner. My first year in Empower Network, I did $499,000 in commissions — not sales, but in commissions. During that time, also, I was running a network marketing company called ViSalus. I hit one star and the best month I had in there was about $35,000. I think I finished with $160,000 in 10 months, over a 1,000 customers and promoters doing that part time as an engineer.
So, that’s kind of where I’ve been. I’ve been a super affiliate with my net sponsoring. I am the #1 affiliate for My Phone Room. I am a top five seller for My Lead System Pro. I am a top seller for, top affiliate for Empower. I was #1 for a very long time. I think I’m #2 right now, currently today.
I’ve been doing this part time. When I say “part time,” it’s kind of interesting. When people say, “Well Lawrence, you don’t do anything else for a living,” I go, “Well, I understand that, but I really do part time. I don’t actually work 40 hours a week doing Internet Marketing.”
The whole idea was I wanted to find a way to generate income where I can make enough money from home and, you know, if I can make another $100,000 a year doing 20-30 hours a week, yeah, it’s not really like a job. It’s more like a part-time gig, but I can do it when I want to over a span of seven days. I can do it at night too, like I’m doing right now. I’m doing a podcast at 10:00 at night, because I have some time.
So this is kind of my journey, where I wanted to go. I wanted to build an income on the side, part time, so it could replace my income. Well, I wouldn’t say likely, I would say God, you know, had a say in it. He basically — I had a point back in 2009 where I wanted to quit. My first time I wanted to quit, I wanted to quit multiple times, and I talked to my wife.
I said, “Man, I’m just kind of burnt out on this affiliate marketing stuff. I’m making a couple hundred here, a couple hundred there. I might have a $5,000 month, and then it’ll just drop. Honey, should I continue doing this or should I just focus on engineering?”
My wife was like, “You know, maybe you should just do what you really want to do, but personally what I think — I mean, if you can’t make the money, I’ll just go back to work.”
See, at that point, we had kids and she was part time, and she was like, “I’ll go back to work if necessary.” That really kind of irked me. It was like — I believe the man of the household is tasked to make the money. They’re the breadwinner, and the wife is, you know, to take care of the kids, not have them go to daycare and strain grandparents for, you know, a babysitter.
So I’m like, “Well, I know my wife can go back to accounting.” She’s an energy accountant, she used to work for Duke Energy, which went under and she started working for other companies that do accounting. She just wasn’t happy there, you know. She was happy with the kids.
I was like, “Okay. If I really want to do this, I have to focus. How can I do it? How can I really just crank it?” So October 2012 was my best income ever in a single month. I think I did $190,000 income. Not sales, but income.
It’s just … if I had quit back in 2009, that would’ve been the end of me. I wanted to quit again back in 2010 to a buddy of mine. David Wood talked me off from a cliff, and he was like, “Hey, you know, I know it’s hard. I know you’re not making the money you want to make.”
See I couldn’t actually believe you could make $10,000 a month consistently. I think I hit it a couple of times, but I never did it back to back. I’d do like a $12,000 in month, and then after expenses, I might take home $6,000. I don’t think I’ve ever actually had an income after expenses, a net profit over $10,000 until I started focusing on some key affiliate principles — where money comes from, how to really gain the trust of other people, and really just gain leverage.
Have a true residual on the Internet, because having a true residual on the Internet is a reason why so many Internet marketers go to network marketing, right? Until I went to network marketing and saw what it took to do a sustainable, residual income — oh my goodness.
So what I wanted to do was share you my story, where I’ve come from, where I’m going, and depending on where you are in your life and where you want to be. Maybe you just want to make $500 a month to help pay for your gas, and maybe some of the things that you want — to take your wife out, or your husband out.
Maybe you want to retire your spouse. Maybe you want to retire yourself. Maybe you want to buy a house for your parents. You know, I want to buy a house for my in-laws. They don’t actually live in the best area, but I want to give them my house and I’ll move into a bigger house. My house isn’t bad, but it’s paid off, though. It’s in a nicer area.
These are the things, these are the goals, so we’ll dive into this and we’ll really focus on where my story — where I stubbed my toe on, and the things that I have learned. I can share this with you and you can learn more from me, right?
So if you’ll continue to learn from me, and of course, subscribe to my podcast — Project Mayhem with Lawrence Tam — and if you want to learn more about what I’m doing, you know, you can come to my blog at www.lawrencetam.net/. Just come there. I actually took out a dot-com back in 2007 I think, or 2008 when I started first blogging, and it’s a horrible site. It’s on blogger.com, so don’t go to dot-com, go to dot-net.
Go to Lawrencetam.net if you want to learn more about some of the things that I’m doing. I have some training in there, have some boot camp stuff, but I have more focused training specifically for the people who listen to my podcast, because I know — you come from something that you need an auditory — maybe you’re at the gym running, or doing your marathon training, or maybe you’re just walking the dog.
We’ll have these a little bit longer. We’ll have more on an interview kind of basis and I’ll bring out some different topics like SEO, pay traffic, affiliate marketing, why you want to blog and things like that. Things for beginners and more advanced people.
Learn from me, go ahead and subscribe to this blog. Continue to listen to what I’m — the value that I’m going to be bringing to you, and you know, it’s just a day in the life of an affiliate marketer who’s, you know, been at the top of the food chain this past year, and how I want to get you to that goal and how you can get to that goal and avoid some of the things that I’ve been through.
So, hey. My name is Lawrence Tam. Learn some more from me. Lawrencetam.net. See you on the next episode.

LT,
Inspiring story. Makes me want to tell mine a year or two years or who knows how long from now.. I’m about 15 years older than you but share many beliefs and goals with you. I have a full time job but plan to eliminate the need for it at some point in the not too distant future. Figuring out this whole EN Blogging thing. It’s coming.. I feel it :$

the first part is understanding WHERE you want to be… cause if your current situation and actions aren’t getting you there (you can tell…) then it’s time to take some action to get there
